According to Archpriest G. S. Debolsky: โ€œIn the understanding of the Church, the Great Schema is nothing less than the supreme vow of the Cross and death; it is the image of complete isolation from the earth, the image of transformation and transfiguration of life, the image of death and the beginning of another, higher, existence.โ€

The Greek letters that appear on the analavos are abbreviations of phrases that extol the Cross as โ€œthe power of Godโ€ (I Corinthians 1:18).

The skull and crossbones represent โ€œthe first man Adamโ€ (I Corinthians 15:45), who by tradition โ€œreturned unto the groundโ€ (Genesis 3:19) at this very spot, the reason that this place of execution, โ€œfull of dead menโ€™s bonesโ€ (Matthew 23:27) became the place where โ€œthe last Adam was made a quickening spiritโ€ (I Corinthians 15:45).

The reed (on the right side of the Cross) represents the โ€œhyssopโ€ (John 19:29) upon which was put โ€œa sponge full of vinegarโ€ (Mark 15:36), which was then โ€œput to His mouthโ€ (John 19:29) when in His โ€œthirst they gave Him vinegar to drinkโ€ (Psalm 68:21), Him of Whom it was said that โ€œall wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouthโ€ (Luke 4:22).

The lance (on the left side of the Cross) represents the โ€œspear [that] pierced His sideโ€; โ€œand forthwith came there out blood and waterโ€ (John 19:34) from Him Who โ€œtook one of Adamโ€™s ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereofโ€ (Genesis 2:21) and Who โ€œwashed us from our sins in His own bloodโ€ (Revelation 1:5).
